Even if you're just leaving for a few minutes, turn off your monitor or set it to turn off automatically. Don't use screen savers. Computers use more energy just displaying them than they do just sitting there.

...recycling one aluminum can can save enough energy to power a TV for up to three hours?

...it takes 50,000 trees to make the weekly Sunday newspaper?

...recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator?

...every month, we throw out enough glass bottles and jars to fill up a giant skyscraper? All of these jars are recyclable!

...every year, each American throws out about 1,200 pounds of organic garbage that can be composted?

...an estimated 80,000,000 Hershey's Kisses are wrapped each day, using enough aluminum foil to cover over 50 acres of space -- that's almost 40 football fields. All that foil is recyclable, but not many people realize it.

...on average, each person in the US discards 8 dry-cell batteries per year? Switching to rechargeable batteries will not only save money, but also prevent hazards such as exposing the environment to lead and acid, and causing burns or danger to eyes and skin.

Use recycled-content toilet paper. If every U.S. household replaced one roll per year, 424,000 trees would be saved.

Use a water filter to purify tap water instead of buying bottled water. Not only is bottled water expensive, but it generates large amounts of container waste.
